Bay Shore, N.Y. - The department is saddened to learn of the passing of Adelphi Hall of Famer Robert Baratta '60, who lost his battle to cancer earlier this week.

Baratta graduated from New Utrecht High School and attended CCNY before entering the United States Coast Guard.

Upon discharge from the United States Coast Guard Baratta attended Adelphi University where he represented the Brown and Gold at numerous big college track meets, winning the 100 and 220 yard dash at the 1957 outdoor Collegiate Track Conference championships held on Stiles Field. Baratta set CTC record of 10.9 and 21.6 in the 100 and 220 yard while picking up his victories.

He was also chosen to compete in the New York vs. London track meet held in London, England and competed for the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) upon graduation from Adelphi.

After graduation, Baratta coached cross country and track and taught physical education at Central Islip High School for two years. He started at Great Neck South High School in 1964 and, in addition to coaching and teaching physical education, spent more than 20 years as the school's athletic director.

A 1960 graduate from Adelphi, he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977 along with Janet L. Ficke, Louis Vlogianitis, Dr. Ruth S. Harley, and Dr. Joan Shean Williams.
