Garden City, N.Y. - After becoming the first College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American in the history of Adelphi men's basketball last season, senior
Michael Coffey will have the chance to repeat the feat this year.
Coffey was honored as an NCAA Division II Academic All-District 1 selection for the second straight year on Thursday, alongside four other players from the Northeast-10 Conference. All five will now advance to the Academic All-America national ballot, which will be voted upon later this month. Academic All-America selections will be announced in March.
Hailing from Monroe, N.Y., Coffey holds a 3.79 GPA in accounting in the classroom. This season, Coffey ranks 11th in the NE10 in points per game (15.6) and in the league's Top 10 in free throw percentage, total points, and free throws made.
In his career to date, Coffey has scored 1,808 points, ranking him third in Adelphi history, with 379 three-pointers which is a new school record. Last year as a junior, the guard set a new program record for single-season scoring, with 647 points, and has averaged double figures in each of his four years.
Upon graduation this spring, Coffey has plans to remain at Adelphi to complete a five-year master's program, which will earn him a master's in accounting with a concentration in finance.
In addition to Coffey, the Academic All-District 1 team included Levi Holmes III (St. Michael's), Julian Lipinski (Saint Rose), Ryan Richmond (Bentley) and Russell Sangster (Le Moyne).
The 2017-18 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District® Men's Basketball Team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, with first-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees to be announced in March.
