Flushing, N.Y. - Over four days of play,
Rebecca Fakas led the way for the Adelphi University tennis teams at the ITA East Region Championship over the weekend, as the senior reached the quarterfinals of the women's singles event at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Fakas, the No. 7 seed in the women's singles draw, posted a pair of marathon victories after a first-round bye, ousting opponents from Saint Thomas Aquinas and Southern New Hampshire University before falling to eventual runner-up Liza Dubrovskaya of Post University.
The Little Neck, N.Y. native defeated Sarah Rohr of STAC, 7-5, 3-6, 10-6, in her opening round, and rallied to defeat Sofia Morais of SNHU, 5-7, 7-6, 10-6 to reach the last eight. In a matchup against the No.4 seed Dubrovskaya, Fakas kept it close, with Dubrovskaya's 6-4, 6-4 victory being determined by a single service break in each set.
Also in the singles draw,
Samantha Perri qualified with a pair of 8-0 victories, and won her first round match against fellow qualifier Evann Welty of Bentley, 6-1, 6-2, before bowing out to No.2 seed Karla Miletic of USciences, 7-5, 6-4.
Adelphi saw three of its women's doubles teams reach the round of 16 in what was a successful event. Top seeds Fakas and
Karen Serina won a round before bowing out after a bye, while the unseeded duo of
Nicole Kielan and
Vanja Savic got an opening-round walkover from the No.14 seeds Kaitlyn Poje and Casey Burns of SNHU, won their next match against Tess Paya and Bagona Gomar of Wilmington (Del.) before seeing their run come to an end in the top half of the draw.
On the bottom half, Perri and
Elizabeth Kallenberg, the No.9 seeds, posted a pair of 8-1 victories before losing to No.8 seeds Miletic and Abby Gamarnik in USciences in a tight 8-6 match.
For the men, No.5 seed
Matteo Cannavera reached the round of 16 in singles, while David Robres de Vecia came out of qualifying as the No.10 seed, before falling in his first round main draw match.
Cannavera and
Sabin Adrian Saveluc had a successful showing to the quarterfinals in doubles as the No.13 seeds. The duo bested Jose Carrillo and Guido Jannsen of Roberts Wesleyan in the first round, 8-2, and edged Stanislas Bedrune and Richard Sec of Queens (N.Y.) in the second round, 8-5.
After two victories against unseeded opponents, the Panther pair posted an on-paper upset against the No.8 seeds Nikola Crevlin and Ludvig Henriksen of Post University to reach the last eight, but saw their run ended by eventual champions Alessandro Evangelisti and Eymeric Chevalier of Concordia.
