Old Westbury, N.Y. -- A sweep of doubles play helped the No. 3-seeded Chestnut Hill College men's tennis team to an eventual 5-2 NCAA Division II East Regional victory over the No. 6 Adelphi University men's tennis team on Monday afternoon.
The Griffins swept doubles play to establish a lead in the match, but the Panthers (11-9) went down fighting at the top two flights.
Sebastian Zapata and
Roey Heymann were edged out in the maximum number of games in a regulation pro set, falling 8-6 at No. 2, while
Matteo Cannavera and
Uladzislau Litvinchuk pushed No. 1 doubles to 7-7 before falling, 9-7.
After Henry Boyle defeated
Daniel Khodosh by winning a close first set and running away with the second at No. 6 singles to put the Griffins one point away from the match win, the Panthers responded by claiming the next two singles points as Cannavera and
Sander Brenner won at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively. However, the Panthers would get no closer as Pierre Kohler edged Litvinchuk by one break of the serve in each set at No. 2, 6-4, 7-5 to send the Griffins into the next round.
The Panthers end their season at 11-9 overall, appearing in their second straight Northeast-10 Championship match and third straight NCAA Tournament.
