Manchester, N.H. -- The Cinderella run for the Adelphi University men's tennis team came to an end in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship on Sunday, as the No. 3 seeded Panthers fell in a 5-2 match to the No. 1 seeds, Southern New Hampshire University.
The top-seeded Penmen (14-7) took the first two points of the afternoon as they claimed victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, but
Sander Brenner and
Daniel Khodosh won their fifth straight match as a pairing at No. 3 doubles to prevent the sweep. The senior and freshman combination took the match from Jeremy Reichentahl and Sebastian Ramirez by an 8-3 score to get Adelphi (11-8) on the board, as the Panthers trailed 2-1 headed to singles.Â
Brenner was unable to repeat the feat in singles, as Xavier Aubron took a 6-3, 6-3 win to put SNHU ahead 3-1 in the match. However, NE-10 Player of the Year
Matteo Cannavera rode one break of serve in each set to a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 to give Adelphi their second point to trail 3-2. However, the Penmen won the next two matches at No. 2 and No. 4, even as
Uladzislau Litvinchuk battled to force second singles to three sets, to claim the match 5-2 an the championship.
Cannavera and Litvinchuk were named to the All-Tournament team alongside Aubron (Most Outstanding Player), Tiago Fernandes and Miguel Marreiros of SNHU, Bentley's George Samander and Merrimack's Miguel Belfort.
"We have had a testing season and the guys today gave it their all out on the court," Interim Head Coach
Joanna Haich stated. "Every player fought for every point and every player made sure it was not going to be an easy win for SNHU. It wasn't the ending we all desired, but there is no doubt that the returning players will want to prove that they are worthy of an NE-10 title and that the graduating seniors left their hearts out on the courts today."
The Panthers will now wait to see if they earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship, as the Division II men's tennis selection show airs live on ncaa.com on Tuesday, May 3 at 8 pm.
