Men's Tennis Downs Skyhawks, 7-2; Will Host Rematch in NE-10 Quarterfinals on Wednesday

North Easton, Mass. -- The Adelphi University men's tennis team closed out the regular season with a 7-2 victory over the Skyhawks of Stonehill College on Saturday afternoon, and secured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference tournament next week.

Adelphi (9-7, 8-2 NE-10) struck first with a win at top flight doubles as Matteo Cannavera and Uladzislau Litvinchuk claimed an 8-5 win at the top spot. From there, however, the Skyhawks (9-8, 5-4 NE-10) rallied to take a 2-1 lead after doubles by the slimmest of margins, as they claimed No. 2 and No. 3 doubles in tiebreaks by identical 7-5 scores. The Panthers fought throughout, including at No. 2 doubles, where despite trailing 7-3 in the set, Sebastian Zapata and Roey Heymann rallied to knot the pro set at 7-7 before eventually falling in a tiebreak.

However, Adelphi quickly leveled at 2-2 behind a 6-2, 6-1 win for Daniel Khodosh at No. 6 singles, en route to a sweep of the singles matches to claim victory. Litvinchuk posted the most dominant win for the Panthers up next, winning 6-2, 6-0, before Brenner also followed up with a 6-4, 6-3 victory to put Adelphi a point away from clinching. The clincher came from Heymann at No. 5, who rallied after dropping the opening set to bagel his opponent in set two before coming all the way back to win 2-6, 6-0, 6-4. Finally, Cannavera returned to singles action with a 7-6(4), 6-3 win at No. 1, and Zapata ensured the Panthers remained perfect as he edged out a 6-3, 5-7, 10-8 win a match tiebreak.

With the win, the Panthers secured the third seed in the Northeast-10 Championship and will host the Skyhawks, who will be seeded #6, in rematch on Wednesday at 2 pm.
