#2 Men's Tennis Advances to Program's First NE-10 Championship Match with 5-1 Semifinal Win Against #3 Stonehill

NE-10 Player and Rookie of the Year Matteo Cannavera clinched Adelphi's victory.

Oceanside, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's tennis team advanced to the program's first Northest-10 Championship match on Thursday afternoon after holding off No. 3 seeded Stonehill College, 5-1, in the first of two conference tournament semifinals. The match was moved indoors to the Point Set Racket Club in Oceanside due to high winds.

Matteo Cannavera and Chiwete Njokanma led Adelphi's efforts on the day, helping the team to four points in total by winning in singles and doubles, while Justin Vijungco's victory at No. 6 singles accounted for Adephi's fifth point on the afternoon.

The Panthers got on the board first awhen Njokanma and Sebastian Zapata partnered for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles, before the two squads split results at No. 1 and No. 2 to move into doubles play with the Brown and Gold leading 2-1. Wins by Njokanma and Cannavera saw Adelphi move ahead 4-1, one victory  away from clinching the match.

Stonehill looked to make a comeback in the match by taking leads at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, while Zapata was simultaneously rallying from a set down at No. 5. However, the match came to an end when Cannavera, who earlier Thursday had been named the Vern Cox Player and Rookie of the Year by the NE-10, delivered the clinching point in his three-set victory at No. 1 singles. He and fellow freshman, Stonehill's Thomas Bellio, split identical 6-3 sets before Cannavera rolled to a 6-1 third set victory to put Adelphi in the championship.

Adelphi (10-4, 9-1 NE-10) advances to Saturday's Northeast-10 Championship match at top-seeded Merrimack College (12-6, 10-0 NE-10) at 1 p.m. The Warriors advanced to the title match with a 5-1 win over No. 4 seed Bentley University (13-8, 7-3 NE-10) in the other semifinal.
