Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's tennis team opened its season with a 7-2 non-conference win against the visiting Tigers of Holy Family University on Saturday afternoon. Despite being forced to default third doubles and sixth singles, the Panthers picked up straight-forward wins in the other matches to claim a 7-2 victory. With the win, the Panthers improve to 1-0 on the year.
The Panthers dropped just one game in two doubles matches, as
Katarina Barborikova and
Charlotte Moreau blanked Anastasiya Kolodiy and Emerald Adams at No. 1 doubles, 8-0, while
Stefani Lineva and
Rebecca Fakas picked up their first collegiate win as a pair, 8-1, over Alina Nersesyan and Casey Borish. With the Brown and Gold forced to default at third doubles, they entered singles play with a 2-1 lead.
The Brown and Gold dominanted in solo play, recording wins in the five completed matches without dropping a set. Freshman Lineva led the team at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 6-1 win, before Moreau and Barborikova showed their veteran poise to claim wins at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. With a 6-1, 6-1 win over Christina Little, senior
Joanna Haich posted the most one-sided result in solo play to pick up her first win of the year at No. 5 singles, while Fakas closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win at fifth flight.
"We are happy our season has started off well with a win," Head Coach
Michael Misiti stated. "The freshmen integrated nicely and I am proud of the team as a whole for a good win."
