Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of the Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College on Friday afternoon. After winning two of the three doubles matches, Goldey-Beacom prevailed in five singles matches total, including two three-setters, to pick up the win. The Brown and Gold drops to 5-1, while the Blue and Gold stay unbeaten at 4-0.
The Panthers started off from behind in the match as they were short one player and forced to default No. 3 doubles. However, freshmen
Stefani Lineva and
Rebecca Fakas improved to 6-0 as a pair to draw the Panthers even at 1-1 win an 8-5 win. In the final doubles match, however, it wasn't to be for
Charlotte Moreau and
Katarina Barborikova; the upperclassmen suffered their first loss of the season at No. 1 doubles to put the Panthers in a 2-1 hole.
Freshman Laura Moreno of Goldey-Beacom continued her strong form to lead the visitors in singles play; after having a hand in the Lightning's win at No. 1 doubles, she easily dispatched Lineva 6-1, 6-3 at top flight singles. It was the first loss for Lineva, the reigning Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week, this season. Amina Mrad posted a mirrored 6-3, 6-1 win over
Joanna Haich at No. 4 to put the Lightning one match away from a win.
The match was decided when Barborikova and Moreau each fell in three set matches, with the latter being forced to retire. The Panthers' lone win in singles came at No. 5, as freshman Fakas defeated Nina Sengl in a match tiebreak to remain undefeated on the season.Â
