Men's Tennis Falls to #3 Chestnut Hill, 5-1, in First Round of NCAA East Regional

Panthers end their season at 11-8 overall.

The men's tennis team closed out their season with a loss to Chestnut Hill in the NCAA East Regional.
Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. - Seeded #6 in the second bracket of 2014 NCAA East Regional, the Adelphi University men's tennis team traveled to nearby Cold Spring Harbor Jr./Sr. High School, the host site selected by the #2 seeded New York Institute of Technology, to face off against the third-seeded Chestnut Hill College Griffins in an opening round match. The Griffins proved to be too strong for the Panthers and came away with a 5-1 win. The Griffins advance to the second round where they will face off against the #2 Bears, while the Brown and Gold ends its season at 11-8.

Chestnut Hill, who checked in at #3 in the final edition of the 2014 ITA East Regional rankings, showed some of the form that took them to that ranking early in the match. Yoann Pham and Steven Say, ranked #6 as a pair in the East Region, blanked Ryan Villaruel and Sebastian Zapata at top flight doubles, 8-0 to give the Griffins an early advantage. Mariano Porter and Anthony Moore also proved too strong for Sander Brenner and Uladzislau Litvinchuk, as they did not concede a game to the Brown and Gold at No. 2. However, the Panthers got on the board courtesy of a strong effort from Chiwete Njokanma and Justin Vijungco, as they defeated Mike Humes and Manuel Ceniceros at the No. 3 spot by a close 8-6 margin.

However, the Griffins pulled away in singles play, securing the three points necessary to advance to the second round. Led by Mariano Porter, ranked #5 in singles in the East Region, the Griffins dropped only five games in six sets to secure the win.

In head coach Michael Misiti's first full season at the helm of the program, the Panthers compiled an 8-2 Northeast-10 Conference record, and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament. The Panthers' selection to the 2014 NCAA Tournament marked their first appearance since 2010.
