Men's Tennis Slips Past SNHU, 5-4

Panthers defeat regionally-ranked Penmen.

Justin Vijunco recorded a 6-1, 6-0 win at sixth singles to see the Panthers to a win.
Sysoset, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's tennis team played host to the regionally-ranked Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday indoors at Sportime at Syosset. The Panthers managed to record a 5-4 win for their first victory over Southern New Hampshire in four years. With the win, the Panthers improve to 4-4 overall and stay perfect in the NE-10 at 3-0. The Penmen drop to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

The Panthers led 2-1 at the close of doubles play courtesy of strong performances at the second and third spots. Sander Brenner and Uladzislau Litvinchuk recorded an 8-4 win for the point at second doubles, while Chiwete Njokanma and Justin Vijunco posted an 8-3 win at the No. 3 spot.

The Penmen, who were selected to finish second in the Northeast-10 Preseason Coaches' Poll, would not go quietly as they managed to record wins at first, second and third singles to keep the match close. However, Njokanma, Litvinchuk and Vijunco all recorded two-set wins in solo play to see the Brown and Gold to victory.

Coach's Thoughts on the Match
"This was our first win against this team in over 4 years, and we needed to be focused from start to finish to get the job done," Head Coach Michael Misiti stated. "They are a very strong team and we needed to play our best. Having now been with the team for over a year, I feel the tactics and team chemistry our coaching staff has implemented are now beginning to flourish. The team is close to each other in this important moment of the season and we are all putting in the sacrifice needed."
