Women's Basketball Suffers First Loss of Season to Stonehill College, 104-92

Despite 51 points in the second half, the Panthers were unable to push their win streak to 13.

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Wednesday night to the Skyhawks of Stonehill College, 104-92. Despite a 16-1 run late in the second half, the Panthers drop to 12-1 overall and 6-1 in Northeast-10 play. Stonehill now posts an 8-4 overall record and stand 5-3 in the conference.

Jessica Kitrys led all players with 31 points and eight rebounds as teammate Sade Jackson completed her seventh double-double of the season with 22 points and 12 assists. Jenna Halaby contributed 12 points and five assists of her own in the loss.

As Stonehill jumped out to 4-2 lead just one minute into the game, the teams would experience three tie scores at four, six and eight points. As the clock displayed 14:43 left, the Panthers would begin to increase their margin on a jumper by Kitrys.

The Brown and Gold were able to jump ahead even more, leading 32-22 with 8:31 on the clock. Stonehill's Tori Faieta jump-started the 12-2 run in favor of the Purple and White, making the score even at 34.

Leading scorer Mary Louise Dixon would account for six points in the remaining two minutes, giving the Skyhawks a 47-41 lead as the half came to a close. Dixon had a team-high 17 points and shot 6-10 from the field. Adelphi shot 64 percent in the first half with Kitrys shooting 6-8 from the field.

Coming out of the locker room, Stonehill would commit a 10-4 run, ultimately leading the Panthers by 14, 59-45. The Skyhawks would continue to climb out of reach as contributions from Kelly Martin, Dixon and Faieta would increase the margin to 23 with 5:15 remaining in the game.

Back-to-back free throw shots from Samantha Milhaven would begin the Panthers attempt to get back in the game. Kelly Mannix, Lauren Nuss, Kitrys and Jackson would be responsible for putting the game in reach, trailing by five, 97-92.

The Panthers were unable to make any more of a comeback as the Skyhawks went 5-6 at the free throw line, making the final score 104-92.
