Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team defeated the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University, 83-38, at the Center for Recreation and Sports on Wednesday night. With the win, the Panthers improve to 14-3 overall and 8-3 in the Northeast-10 while the Penmen drop to 6-11 and 4-8 in conference play.
Leading the way for Adelphi was
Kelly Mannix, who tallied a team-high 14 points and also added four steals.
Jessica Kitrys and
Sade Jackson combined for 22 points and 13 rebounds, while
Samantha Milhaven came off the bench to chip in nine points. For the Penmen, Brooke Springfield was their lone scorer in double figures with 10 points.
In a game where they never trailed, the Panthers broke out to an early 12-4 lead behind points from Mannix, Kitrys and Jackson. From there, the two squads would trade points until a pair of free throws from
Jenna Halaby put the Panthers up, 19-10.
The Penmen would make it a one possession game, 23-20, at the 10:39 mark behind a jumper from Erin Doherty. From there, the Panthers would embark on an 11-4 scoring run which brought them to a 10-point, 34-24 lead.
The Panthers continued to lead by double digits for the duration of the half. Jackson put in a layup in the paint to push the Panthers' lead to 38-24 at 5:56, and they would again lead by 14 behind a three from
Lauren Nuss at the 3:29 mark. Nuss would sink two from the charity stripe with just eight seconds remaining to put Adelphi in the locker room up 12, 43-31.
The Panthers opened the second half on a 10-0 scoring run to increase their lead to 22 points, 53-33. Behind another 11-0 streak over the next five minutes of play, the Panthers opened up a 64-33 lead with just over 10 minutes to play.
Adelphi's bench tallied 20 points in the second half, as
Ashley Gomez,
Ifeanyi Ofili and
Sierra Schrader all scored buckets in the half. Defensively, the Panthers held the Penmen to just seven points on 2-22 from the field in the second half to come away with the victory.
