Box Score Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi women's basketball team opened the 2013-14 season on Saturday, November 9 with a resounding 112-46 victory over Concordia College in front of an enthusiatic crowd in the Center for Recreation and Sports. With the win the Panthers open the season, 1-0 and set a new program record for most points scored and largest margin of victory, eclipsing the previous mark set on January 20, 1996 in a 104-39 win, also over Concordia.
Jessica Kitrys led six Panthers in double figures with 22 points and had a team high nine rebounds, while teammate
Sade Jackson opened the season with her typical all-around effort, 13 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds.
Jenna Halaby chipped in 19 points and five rebounds on 5-8 shooting, while
Kelly Mannix added 13 points and five boards and
Sierra Schrader picked up 11 points and four rebounds in her collegiate debut.
The Panthers opend the game strong, using an 18-6 run over the first 5:13 of play to take an early 12 point lead on the back of Jackson and Kitrys, who combined for 11 points. However, Concordia hung around, getting to within single digits, 31-23, on a triple from Tara-Ann Rock.
Unfortunately for the visiting Clippers, back-to-back free throws from Halaby ignited a 25-5 Panther run over the final 7:41 that sent the Brown and Gold into the locker room with a 28 point cushion, 56-28. Adelphi got points from six different players during the run, including eight from Kitrys and six from Mannix.
The second half was more of the same, as the Panthers held Concordia to just five points for the first 13:03 of the second half, while putting up 44 points of their own and taking a 100-33 lead on a
Calli Balfour lay-up. In all, the Brown and Gold out scored Concordia 69-10 over a 20:44 stretch of play. The 67 point lead was the largest of the day for Adelphi, who went on to pick up a 66 point win, 112-46.
This marks just the fifth time in program history that Adelphi has reached the 100 point mark, with the previous 100 point game coming on February 25, 2009 in a 100-50 win over Concordia. In all, the Panthers have topped the 100 point mark four times against the Clippers and once against Mercy.
