Second Half Scoring Spree Lifts Women's Basketball over AIC, 88-53

The team improves to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Northeast-10.

Jenna Halaby contributed 15 points to the win, going 5-7 from the field and a perfect 5-5 at the free throw line.

Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University women's basketball team picked up its fourth consecutive win this season as they defeated American International College 88-53, Saturday afternoon. The victory improves Adelphi's record to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in Northeast-10 conference play. The Yellow Jackets pick up their first loss of the season and stand 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Five Panthers had points in double digits, with Jessica Kitrys leading the way with 18. Jenna Halaby and Sade Jackson each had 15 points, while Shannon Flynn and Calli Balfour collected 11 points apiece. Kitrys also registered 10 rebounds and Balfour chipped in nine of her own.

The Brown and Gold jumped out to an early 17-6 lead just seven minutes into the first half. Adelphi kept the lead the entire game, but the Yellow Jackets would come within one, 26-25, on a layup by Sydney Tepley, AIC's second highest scorer with 15 points. She also collected eight boards in the loss.

Going into the half, the Panthers held a five point lead over the Black and Gold, 39-34.

Coming out of the locker room, Adelphi would go on a nine point run, with Halaby contributing five from free throws and a layup. The Panthers would go on to score 49 points in the second half, as the team went 4-9 from behind the arc and 13-16 at the free throw line.

Tara Flynn would seal the deal for the Panthers as she nailed a three pointer with under a minute remaining to give them a 35 point margin and another win.

Coach's Thoughts on the Game

"Our girls did a great job on defense which turned into our offense, something we've been focusing on at practice," commented Assistant Coach Cait Wetmore. " The team was relentless today and their energy and aggressiveness stood out, which contributed to the win."

Up Next

The Panthers will host the College of Saint Rose on November 26, at 5:30 pm in the Center for Recreation and Sports. This is their last home game for 2013, as the month of December into January has the squad scheduled for six road trips before returning to Garden City, N.Y.
