Philadelphia, Pa. - The Adelphi University women's tennis team opened the 2012-13 season with authority, defeating Holy Family University 8-1 in a non-conference match at the Torresdale Frankford Country Club on Saturday. The Panthers took all but one singles match to improve to 1-0, and the Tigers drop to an even 3-3 overall.
Sophomore
Joanna Haich led the way for Adelphi and did not surrender a game from the No. 6 singles or No. 3 doubles positions. The Flushing, N.Y., native cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win in singles play and paired with junior
Gaby Adia for an 8-0 tag-team victory.
Senior
Maria Toft bounced back from a 6-0 second set defeat to claim a hard-fought 6-2, 0-6, 10-8 win at top flight singles, and seniors
Samra Redzematovic and
Michelle Gurda joined forces to cap a successful day with an 8-2 triumph at No. 2 doubles.
The Panthers will return to Holy Family on Saturday for the three-day ITA East Region Championship.
