Albany, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball team completed its Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division weekend series at The College of Saint Rose with a 5-3 win over the Golden Knights on Sunday. The Panthers improve to 22-19 overall and 10-7 in the division to hold tight to fourth place in the Southwest, while Saint Rose drops to 14-25-1 overall and 3-13-1 in the Southwest.
Junior
Anthony Zarrella belted a solo home run in the third inning to get the Panthers on the board, marking his third homer in four games and moving the slugger to fifth in the NE-10 in round-trippers. Zarrella also ripped a single and a double to raise his slugging percentage to .597, good for fourth in the league.
Richard Mejia and
Donato Signore each had two hits, a run scored and an RBI, while
Craig Matteo was hit by the pitch a season-high three times. On the mound,
Michael Carletti earned the win in 6.1 innings, striking out four and allowing three runs on seven hits. Carletti held the Golden Knights to just one run in the first six frames, after which
Chris Pabisch took over for 1.2 innings of relief.
Matt Abramowitz closed the door in the ninth for his sixth save of season, moving one save closer to the single season record of nine.
Saint Rose struck first and took a 1-0 lead on an RBI double by Alex Ferenti in the second, but Zarrella answered with a solo homer in the top of the third.
Kevin Hutzel gave Adelphi the lead with a sacrifice fly in fourth, and Mejia smashed an RBI double before Signore and
Chad Houghton ripped run-scoring singles to make it a 5-1 game after four and a half.
The Golden Knights picked up a pair of runs in the seventh on an infield single and a bases loaded walk, but Pabisch fanned the final batter to escape the jam. The Panther southpaw retired the side in order in the eighth, and Abramowitz closed it out in the bottom of the ninth to secure the victory.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday with their final regular season road game at Southern Connecticut State University at 3:30 p.m.
