Albany, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball team split a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader at The College on Saint Rose on Saturday, falling 4-2 in game one before bouncing back for the 5-0 win in game two. The Panthers move to 21-19 overall and 9-7 in the division, and the Golden Knights shift to 13-26 overall and 5-11 in the Southwest.
Junior
Anthony Zarrella led the way at the plate for the Panthers, unloading a two-run homer in game one and going 2-4 with two runs scored in the nightcap. In game two, Jamie Liebowtiz delivered a three-run bomb to put Adelphi on the board, and
Richard Mejia and
Donato Signore each knocked RBI singles.
On the mound,
Dillon McNamara took the tough-luck loss in game one after tossing seven innings, striking out eight and allowing just one earned run. In game two, freshman
Mike Cranston threw five shutout innings and scattered five hits to improve to 5-0 on the season.
James McCormack and
Matt Abramowitz combined for 2.1 innings of hitless relief, and
Chris Murphy got the call out of the bullpen in both games and threw two innings of one-hit baseball.
The Panthers opened up a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in game one on Zarrella's homer, but Saint Rose starter Kris Barone would prove untouchable the rest of the way. Barone picked up the complete game win and fanned nine batters to put Adelphi away in the opener.
The Adelphi bats were resurrected in game two and banged out 11 hits en route to the shutout victory. A three-run third on the strength of a three-run Liebowitz bomb gave Cranston plenty of room to throw five quality innings and seque into another scoreless outing by the Panthers' bullpen.
The Panthers return to action on Sunday when they will attempt to win the three-game weekend series against Saint Rose at 12 p.m.
