Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball team ran into another solid pitching performance and fell to Bentley University 2-0 in Northeast-10 Conference action at William J. Bonomo Field on Saturday. The Falcons rode the arm of starting pitcher Rob Finneran, who tossed the second complete game for Bentley in as many days, holding the Panthers to seven hits while striking out nine. Adelphi drops to 8-7 overall and 0-2 in NE-10 play, and the Falcons improve to 11-11 and 2-0 in the league.
For Adelphi,
Vincent Sharkey,
Craig Matteo and
Richard Mejia each had two hits, with Mejia smacking a leadoff double in the seventh. Junior
Jimmy Milani assembled a quality outing on the hill, throwing 6.2 innings without allowing an earned run. Milani scattered seven hits, struck out three and walked none, but an Adelphi fielding error in the fifth led to a pair of unearned runs that proved to be the only runs of the game.
James McCormack and
Mike Cranston combined to throw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit each.
For Bentley, Kevin Korwek ripped three hits including a double, and Logan Gillis had three hits with a two-bagger and the go-ahead single in the fifth. The Falcons capitalized on a leadoff fielding error to start the fifth that put Vinnie Eruzione on first. A Sean Keddy bunt and Mike Muir single moved Eruzione to third, and Gillis' RBI base hit to left field drove in what proved to be the winning run.
The Panthers struggled to put together scoring opportunities, stranding six men on base. Perhaps the best Adelphi chance came in the seventh when Mejia drilled a leadoff double to left center, but a strikeout, pop-up and ground out helped Finneran escape the inning unharmed.
Adelphi returns to action tomorrow with an NE-10 doubleheader against Stonehill College at 12 p.m.
