Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team closed out the 2011-12 season with a 78-64 loss to Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday at the Center for Recreation and Sport. The Panthers held a 33-31 lead at the half, but the second-place Owls poured it on and shot 45.9 percent from the field in the second stanza to seize the win. Adelphi finishes the year with a record of 9-17 overall and 7-15 in Northeast-10 Conference play, marking the most overall wins since the 2008-09 season, the most wins under second-year head coach Heather Jacobs, and the most league wins since the Panthers joined the NE-10 in 2009-10. Southern Connecticut improves to 22-4 overall and 19-3 in league play.

For Adelphi, sophomore Jessica Kitrys turned in her fourth consecutive game with at least 20 points, recording 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting to go with six rebounds. Kitrys finishes the season as the team's leading scorer at 15.8 points per game and is a lock to finish in NE-10's top 10 in scoring. Senior Amanda Campusano scored 15 points and knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in her final collegiate game, and sophomore Sade Jackson tallied 12 points, six assists and five rebounds. Freshman Kelly Mannix tied Kitrys for the team lead with her fourth double-double of the season to the tune of 11 points and 10 rebounds.

For the Owls, Camille Fantini lit up the hoop for a game-high 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting and a 5-of-11 clip from behind the arc. Fantini also grabbed 11 rebounds, second on the night only to Moni Smith-Ocran, who pulled down 13 boards to compliment eight points. Sylvonya Moore chipped in 15 points and eight rebounds, and Mariah Hankton added 14 points with three 3-pointers off the bench.

The Panthers came out strong and built a steady lead well into the first half, leading by as many as eight points at the 12:35 mark. A Mannix 3-pointer capped an early 11-4 run to open the contest, and a pair of free throws by Campusano gave Adelphi an 18-10 lead which would prove to be the largest of the game. Southern Connecticut answered with a 9-0 streak that put them back in front by a score of 27-24 with 5:39 left in the half, but Campusano swished a shot from downtown with 36 seconds left that put the Panthers up 33-31 at the half.

Jackson and Kitrys combined for six points in the first four minutes of the second period to reclaim the lead, but Moore rolled in a layup to put the Owls ahead for good at the 13:47 mark. Aggressive 3-point shooting worked out in Southern Connecticut's favor, as the Owls stretched their lead to double digits with Fantini's 3-for-5 shooting from long range in the second half. Down by 10 with a minute to play, the Panthers were forced to foul, but Southern Connecticut hit on 7-of-8 freebies in the final minutes to run away with a win in the regular season finale.
