Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University women's basketball team surrendered a late 10-point lead and gave way to a University of New Haven rally that gave the visitors a 79-77 win in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday. The Chargers outscored the hosts 12-3 in the final 2:30 to improve to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference. With the loss, the Panthers drop to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the NE-10.
The Panthers were led by
Sade Jackson, who recorded her second consecutive triple-double with 19 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds. Adelphi had a trio of players also in double figures, as
Kelly Mannix dropped 16 points and snagged 11 rebounds,
Jessica Kitrys added 12 and
Lauren Nuss had 11.
For New Haven, Briana Bradford led all scorers with 21 points, while Aquilliln Hayes followed closely with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Ashley Leblanc chipped in 17 points and Bria Moore tied for the game-high with 11 boards.
The Chargers took a 15-9 lead over the first five minutes of the game and their lead grew to 10 with 14:08 remaining in the half, 21-11. The Panthers began to chip away from there, as back-to-back pairs of free throws by Jackson and a steal and a layup from
Ifeanyi Ofili cut the visitors' lead to 21-17. The Panthers would tie it up at 23-23 on a layup from Kitrys with 11:00 remaining, but the Chargers proceeded to go on a 9-0 run on the back of seven foul shots, despite only shooting 69 percent from the charity stripe in the half.
A layup from
Jenna Halaby and another jumper from Jackson cut the lead to 32-27, but the Chargers would respond with an 11-0 run to lead 43-27 with four minutes remaining and would eventually take a 48-35 lead into halftime.
Out of halftime, the Panthers cut the Chargers' lead to single digits, 50-47, courtesy of two three-pointers from Mannix and a layup from Jackson. The Chargers would push back with a 9-5 run to bring their lead to 59-52, but Nuss and Ofili drained consecutive threes to bring the hosts within one, 59-58, with less than 10 minutes remaining.
The Panthers would take the lead for the first time since 18:23 in the opening half as Jackson put in another layup to give the hosts a 62-61 lead. A deluge of scoring, which included four consecutive three-pointers from Mannix and Nuss, gave the Panthers their largest lead of the game, 77-67, with 2:29 remaining. Briana Bradford drained two three-pointers for the Chargers over that stretch, the second of which gave the visitors the lead for good.
The Panthers are back in action on Sunday when they travel to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., to face off against Mercy College in a non-conference contest. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
