Jackson's Buzzer Beater Lifts Women's Basketball Over Saint Michael's, 60-58

Panthers use 7-0 run to rally for win, Jackson flushes crafty layup as time expires

Sade Jackson's buzzer beater brings Adelphi within just one win away from matching last season's NE-10 victory total.
Box Score Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team assembled a last-minute 7-0 run capped by Sade Jackson's heads-up inbounds play and buzzer-beating layup to knock off Saint Michael's College, 60-58, in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Center for Recreation and Sport on Saturday. The Panthers, who were led by four players in double figures, improve to 6-7 overall and 4-5 in NE-10 play, while the Purple Knights slip to 6-7 and 3-6 in league competition.

For Adelphi, senior Amanda Campusano led all scorers with 20 points on 5-of-10 shooting from 3-point land. Sophomore Jessica Kitrys earned 16 points and eight rebounds, while Jackson and freshman Kelly Mannix tallied 10 points apiece. The Panthers shot just 33 percent from the field in the first half, but turned it around to shoot at a 56 percent clip in the second period and power their way to the come-from-behind victory.

For Saint Michael's, Nicole Adach scored a team-high 15 points, while Coreen Hennessy poured in 14 with 3 steals and two assists. Alexa Long registered nine points on 2-of-3 shooting from behind the arc, and Megan Olsen contributed eight points and six rebounds. The Purple Knights continued to shoot well from the foul line with an 11-of-12 mark on the day.

The Panthers struggled to get on the board early on, securing their first field goal on a Kitrys layup five minutes into the first half. Lucky for the hosts, the Purple Knights started slow as well, and the two teams found themselves knotted at 8-8 with 12:11 to play. A constant back-and-forth struggle saw Adelphi hold a slim 20-17 lead with five minutes to go in the half, but Saint Michael's finished the period with an 8-2 run including five points from Long that gave the Purple Knights a 31-25 advantage at halftime.

Saint Michael's maintained a steady advantage but could not stretch its lead beyond seven points the entire second half. The Panthers shot a respectable 56 percent from the field as they fought back into the game and took advantage of a cold Purple Knight offense that went just 10-for-31 from the field and 1-for-7 on 3-pointers in the second frame. Adelphi's persistence finally paid off in the final minutes, as Mannix hit a three and Jackson and Jenna Halaby exchanged layups to tie the game at 58-58.

The Purple Knights set up for one last offensive attempt, feeding the ball to Adach who could not convert the layup on the low block. Jackson grabbed the defensive rebound and the Panthers immediately called timeout. After rushing down the floor, Adelphi drew the foul to get possession under their own basket with two seconds remaining. Jackson received the ball on the baseline, and while looking to inbound it, bounced the ball to herself off the back on an unsuspecting Saint Michael's defender, leaving her wide open on the left block to lay in the winning basket as time expired.

Jackson's last-minute heroics gives Adelphi its second win by a single basket of the season, and leaves the Panthers just one win shy of matching their conference win total from last season. Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday when they host UMass Lowell at 5:30 p.m.
