Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi Unversity women's basketball team found its offensive groove and snapped a six-game losing streak with an 86-83 win over the University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Center for Recreation and Sport on Tuesday. The victory that saw five Panthers score in double figures marks Adelphi's highest point total for a single game since beating Concordia 89-61 on Jan. 24, 2009. With the win, the Panthers improve to 7-13 overall and 5-11 in NE-10 play, matching last season's conference win total. The Chargers fall to 2-18 overall and 2-14 in league competition.

Freshman Kelly Mannix posted her third double-double of the season and her second in three games with a team-best 17 points and 11 rebounds. Jessica Kitrys poured in 16 points on an ecomincal 6-of-9 shooting while grabbing nine boards, and Amanda Campusano also had 16 points and snagged four steals. Freshmen Samantha Milhaven and Brenna Gonsalves formed a dynamic duo by scoring career-highs of 15 and 13 points, respectively, and combined to go 9-of-14 from the floor and 8-of-10 from the free throw line. Gonsalves knocked down 2-of-3 shots from behind the arc, and Milhaven made the most of her time on the court by scoring 15 points in just 10 minutes of play. Sade Jackson rounded out the six Panthers who found the scoring column with nine points, 10 assists and four blocks. Jackson's second doube-digit assist performance of the season helps her remain second in the NE-10 in helpers per game.

For New Haven, Anh-Dao Tran and Audrey Cunningham each tallied a game-high 18 points. Tran went 7-for-9 from the floor and 2-for-2 on both 3-pointers and free throws, and Cunningham made 4-of-7 shots from downtown. The Chargers shot 48.5 percent from the field, edging Adelphi's 42.2 percent, but got to the foul line just eight times during the contest. Free throw shooting proved to be the deciding factor down the stretch as the Panthers made 24-of-30 attempts from the charity stripe.

Adelphi rushed out to an early double-digit lead, opening the game on an 18-7 run in the first five minutes. The hosts stretched the lead as wide as 13 points after layups on back-to-back possessions by Milhaven, but New Haven assembled an 8-2 run that brought the Chargers back within two buckets with three minutes to play in the half. The visitors whittled the lead down to just two points with 1:07 to go, but Kitrys connected on 1-of-2 free throws in the last minute to make it a 40-37 game at halftime.

The Chargers seized control once the second half began, claiming their first lead of the game on a Bria Moore 3-pointer to bring the score to 43-42. The margin slowly grew as Adelphi sank just one field goal over a four minute stretch, falling behind by seven and allowing New Haven to earn its largest lead of the game. Milhaven and Gonsalves teamed up to counter the Charger surge, as a 3-pointer and pair of free throws by Gonsalves at the 9:10 mark sparked a five-point swing that made it a one-possession game.

Minutes later, Jackson and Mannix each sank two free throws to reclaim the lead, but New Haven immediately swiped it back and held tight to a narrow lead all the way until the final minute. Trailing 81-79 with 1:20 to play, the Panthers got the ball to Kitrys, who delivered with a layup, drew a foul and netted the free throw to give Adelphi a 82-81 lead. Two more free throws from Kitrys and a pair for Campusano sealed the deal, giving the Panthers a 86-83 win.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday when they hit the road for a rematch against American International College. Earlier this season, the Yellow Jackets handed Adelphi a 52-45 loss, but the Panthers will get a chance for redemption when they tip off at 1:30 p.m.
