Box Score Garden City, N.Y. - Despite double-doubles from
Jessica Kitrys and
Kelly Mannix, the Adelphi University women's basketball team dropped its fifth straight game via a 76-64 setback to Stonehill College at the Center for Recreation and Sport on Wednesday. The loss sends Adelphi to 6-12 overall and 4-10 in Northeast-10 Conference play, and the Skyhawks improve to 9-9 overall and 5-9 in league action.
Kitrys and Mannix cashed in their third and second double-double of the year, respectively, leading the consistent group of four Panthers in double-figures in scoring. Kitrys scored a team-best 18 points while grabbing a career-high 13 rebounds, 11 of which were in the first half and six of which were on the offensive end. Mannix, the defending NE-10 Rookie of the Week, tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds, while
Sade Jackson and
Amanda Campusano chipped in 14 and 12 points, respectively.
For Stonehill, Asia Ewing led all scorers with 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting, scoring time and again on back door cuts and precision lob passes from her teammates. Amy Pelletier shot with deadly accuracy as she dropped in 16 points, going 6-for-9 from the field and 4-for-9 from 3-point land. Tori Faieta used her well-honed post moves to tally 13 points and eight rebounds, and Tania Williams had 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.
The Skyhawks opened up an early lead, jumping out to a 13-5 advantage in the first five minutes on a Priscilla Dodoo jumper. Adelphi fought back to a two-point game on a long 3-pointer by Campusano, making it 15-13, but a 14-3 run by Stonehill quickly put the visitors in the driver's seat for the remainder of the half.
After heading to the locker room with a 36-23 advantage, Stonehill put their foot on the throttle to open the second half, extending their lead to 21 points midway through the frame. Ewing, Pelletier and Faieta combined for 29 points in the second half, but the combo of Kitrys and Jackson went for 21 points to keep the Adelphi hopes alive. Despite fighting off constant double-teams in the paint, Kitrys hit 5-for-6 shots from the floor for 11 second half points, and Jackson used aggressive drives to the hoop to pick up 10 points.
Adelphi narrowed the deficit to 10 points on a Mannix 3-pointer with 5:12 to play, but 66-56 would be as close as the Panthers would get as they hit on just 3-of-9 field goals and went 0-for-3 from the foul line in the final five minutes of the game.
The Panthers return to action at Saint Anselm College for an NE-10 contest on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
