Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team cut a 14-point deficit to a one-possession game in the final two minutes, but the Panthers could not complete the comeback as they fell to Southern New Hampshire University, 81-74, in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Center for Recreation and Sport on Saturday. In an in-the-paint slugfest that saw 72 combined points scored in the key, the Penmen put up 50 second-half points on the back of 57.1 percent shooting from the field to improve to 15-4 overall and 10-3 in NE-10 play. Adelphi saw balanced scoring once again with four players in double figures, but foul trouble down the stretch allowed the visitors to hit on 14-of-19 shots from the charity stripe and knock the Panthers down to 6-11 and 4-9 in league competition.
Adelphi's
Jessica Kitrys poured in a game-high 21 points, marking the second straight game and third contest on the year with at least 20 points. Kitrys also grabbed nine rebounds while battling against SNHU's Sloane Sorrell for down-low dominance, and earned a slight scoring advantage over her Blue and Gold counterpart who tallied a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds.
Also for the Panthers,
Amanda Campusano scored 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc and
Kelly Mannix snagged 12 points and six rebounds.
Ashley O'Connell tallied a season-high 11 points and brought down seven boards in just 12 minutes of play.
Sade Jackson was held to six points, her third-lowest total of the season, but still made things happen by dishing out a season-best 11 assists.
For the Penmen, Brooke Springfield recorded 18 points, going 7-for-9 from the charity stripe and sinking five crucial free throws down the stretch to preserve her team's lead. Michelle Roma and Victoria Wiseman had 12 and 11 points, respectively, and Christine Duffy came within three of SNHU's single-game assist record by handing out a season-high 15 assists.
In the first half, Campusano connected on 3-of-4 3-pointers to help Adelphi stay within striking distance of the Penmen. SNHU grew its lead as large as nine points on a layup by Sorrell with 12:23 to play, but the Panthers assembled a 7-3 run in the final 3:15 to make it a 31-27 score favoring SNHU at the half.
The Panthers managed to tie the game at 41-41 at the 13:56 mark in the second stanza on an O'Connell layup following a steal by Mannix, but the Penmen countered with a 10-2 run to reclaim control. As part of their 50-point second half performance, the visitors looked to put the game out of reach as the Penmen claimed a 14 points lead with four minutes to go via a definitive 3-pointer by Wiseman, but the scrappy Panthers would claw their way back into contention over the final minutes.
An 8-0 run began with 3:55 to play on back-to-back layups by Kitrys, who continued to duel with Sorrell in the paint. A possession later, Kitrys missed a foul shot, but Mannix soared over her defender to grab the offensive rebound and lay the ball back in. A fast break layup, drawn foul and ensuing free throw by Duffy halted Adelphi's run however, giving SNHU a 72-63 lead with just over two minutes to play. The Panthers were forced to foul, and the Penmen made 10-of-14 free throws in the final 2:11 to ice the victory.
The Panthers, still in search of their fifth conference win to tie last season's total, host Stonehill College on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
