Adelphi Recognizes the 40th Anniversary of the Mile Relay World Record

The Quartet set the world record on January 14, 1972 and then lowered it a week later.

Garden City, N.Y. - Today marks the 40th anniversary of the indoor mile relay world record set back on January 14, 1972 at the University of Maryland's Cole Field House. It marked the first world record in Adelphi track history.

On that night, the quartet of Clyde McPherson, Keith Davis, Larry Ross and Dennis Walker took to the track in the final race of the evening in the championship heat of the mile relay and made history by breaking the world record. Their time of 3:13.7 eclipsed the previous record by .3 seconds set by the Philly Pioneers, a club team.

Under the direction of Head Coach Ron Bazil, the team lowered the mark a week later. On January 21st in Philadelphia, the relay once again broke the world record which was set earlier in the meet by the Philly Pioneers, by running 3:12.2.

The relay went on to win the mile relay at the 1972 NCAA Track and Field Championships in Detroit, Michigan at the Joe Louis Arena with Ray Lee taking the place of Ross.
