Women's Basketball Nipped by UMass Lowell, 75-68

Adelphi shooting goes cold in second half as River Hawks seize come-from-behind win

Sophomore Jessica Kitrys led the Panthers in scoring for the second time in three games with 15 points.
Box Score Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team could not carry its potent first half offensive performance into the second stanza as UMass Lowell ran away with a 75-68 win in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Center for Recreation and Sport on Wednesday evening. The Panthers shot a solid 51.9 percent from the floor in the first half to the River Hawks' 32.5 percent, but the numbers reversed in the second half as Adelphi's shooting went cold and UMass Lowell turned an 8-point halftime deficit into a road win via a combined 30 second half points from Bianca Simmons and Danielle DePierro.

With the loss, Adelphi slips to 6-8 overall and 4-6 in NE-10 play, still one win shy from matching last season's conference win total. UMass Lowell improves to 5-9 and 4-6 in league competition.

The Panthers saw balanced scoring from their lineup with four players in double figures for the second straight game. Sophomore Jessica Kitrys led the way with 15 points, six rebounds and three blocks, abd classmate Sade Jackson tallied 13 points while dishing out six assists and recording a pair of blocks and steals. Senior Amanda Campusano and freshman Kelly Mannix each poured in 12 points, with Mannix pulling down a game-high nine boards and snagging four steals. Adelphi, undersized on paper compared to the River Hawks who sported seven players over 6 feet tall, managed to outrebound the visitors 44 to 43.

For the River Hawks, Simmons led all scorers with 23 points, 19 of which came in the second half. The junior guard went a blistering 8-for-12 from the floor in the second stanza after quietly going 2-for-11 for four points in the first frame. DePierro finished with 17 points with five 3-pointers and an 11-point second half performance, and Brianna Calver notched 14 points. After jacking up 17 treys in the first half and making only four, UMass Lowell changed its strategy in the second half and went 16-for-30 from the floor including 3-of-5 shooting from behind the arc.

Adelphi scampered out to a six point lead in the first seven minutes of play as Kitrys rolled in a layup to cap a 6-0 run to make it 13-7. UMass Lowell's Dominique Pagan would snag the lead back with a jumper with 9:42 to go, but freshman Brenna Gonsalves knocked down a 3-pointer for her first collegiate points to swing the advantage back to the hosts. The Panthers would hold tight to the lead the rest of the half, extending it to eight points on an old-fashioned 3-point play by Mannix with 1:31 left.

UMass Lowell slowly whittled away at the Adelphi lead once play resumed and tied the game at the 13:34 mark, holding the Panthers to just one field goal in the first 6:43 of the second half. Simmons and DePierro would soon catch fire, as the pair accounted for a combined seven ties and lead exchanges as their squad battled for control of the game. The duo heated up just as the Panthers cooled off, resulting in an 8-point swing two-thirds of the way through the half that gave the River Hawks the lead for good.

The Panthers hit the road for tough back-to-back NE-10 road games, beginning with Franklin Pierce on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. followed by Bentley on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Ravens recently dropped out of the nation's Top 25 in the most recent USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll, while the Falcons hold a #9 ranking.
