New Haven, Conn. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team fell 69-61 at Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday evening in the team's Northeast-10 Conference opener. The Panthers trailed by 10 points at halftime, pulled within four early in the second half, but never led in the contest and fell to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in NE-10 play. The Owls improved to 1-0 overall and in league competition.

For the Panthers, sophomore Jessica Kitrys scored a team-best 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting and narrowly missed her second straight double-double with nine rebounds. Sade Jackson scored 10 points, while Shannon Flynn knocked down 3-of-4 3-pointers for nine points. Senior Amanda Campusano rounded out the Adelphi offense with nine points while grabbing seven rebounds.

For Southern Connecticut, Sylvonya Moore recorded a game-high 19 points and missed just three shots all game. Keshia Primo and Moni Smith-Ocran each chipped in 10 points for the Owls, who shot a nearly identical 40.3 percent from to field to Adelphi's 40.4 percent.

Adelphi tied the game early on a Kitrys layup 50 seconds after the opening tip, but that would be as close as the Panthers would get as the Owls began to pull away midway through the half. SCSU's Alex Fiola nailed a 3-pointer at the 11:55 mark to put the Owls up 19-10, and Adelphi clawed back within three points on two good free throws from Marielle Duryea, but an 8-0 SCSU run widened the lead to 17 with 3:29 left in the half. Kitrys dropped in two layups in the final 90 seconds of the period to keep Adelphi in the game, but heading into halftime the Owls held a 40-30 lead.

The Panthers opened the second half with an 8-2 run sparked by Flynn trey 16 seconds in, but Adelphi could not get closer than seven points down the rest of the way. The Brown and Gold outscored the Owls 31-29 in the second period and shot 47.8 percent from the field, but 26 total turnovers and a 43-33 rebounding deficit would prove to be Adelphi's undoing as SCSU held on for the win.

Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, November 19 with a non-conference game against C.W. Post at 2 p.m.
