Volleyball Sweeps Southern CT on Senior Night, 3-0

The Panthers improved to 10-3 in the Northeast-10 with a straight game win.

The Adelphi University volleyball team played host to Northeast-10 rival Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday, November 1 in their final home game of the regular season. With the Panthers celebrating "Senior Night", Adelphi's veterans led the way to a straight game victory, 25-16, 25-20 and 26-25. WIth the win Adelphi improves to 17-7 overall and 10-3 in the NE-10, while SCSU falls to 19-9 overall and 8-6 in conference.

Chelsea Overholt paced the offense with a game-high 15 kills, while Patawe Simms chipped in seven. Erika Loomer had 26 set assists in the win, while Bianca Hernandez led the defense with a game-high 26 digs, teammate Bree Popham added nine digs.

The first game was close early, but the Panthers used a a 7-3 run to assert their dominance and turn a 11-10 game into a 18-13 contest and ultimately a 25-16 victory. The second game was close throughout, as the Panthers led by just three late, 22-19. However, Adelphi scored three of the final four points, including kills by Samantha Rico and Kaitlyn DeStefano to take the second game, 25-20.

Adelphi pushed out to a 8-5 lead early in game three, but the Owls bounced back, pulling to within one, 11-10 on an Adelphi attack error. The Panthers used a 7-3 run, similar to the first game, to take another 18-13 lead, but this time SCSU battled back, taking a 22-21 lead on an Adelphi miscue. An Owl kill late, knotted the action at 24 all, when Overholt threw down back-to-back kills to give the Panthers a 26-24 victory.

Adelphi will close out the 2011 regular season on the road this weekend with games at St. Anselm and St. Michael's on Friday, November 4 and Saturday, November 5 at 7 pm and 1 pm.
