Flushing, N.Y. — Over the weekend, the Adelphi men's tennis team competed in the ITA East Regional at the US National Tennis Center in Queens.
Five Panthers advanced into the men's open second round in Viktor Hockl, Louca Bertone, Spyridon Papageorgiou, Matias Hoyos and Elouan Boyer. This was the first ITA victory for Papageorgiou, Hoyos and Boyer.
Hockl, who was the number two overall seed, advanced the furthest for Adelphi, reaching the quarterfinal before falling in a third set tiebreaker. In the process, he took down 12-seeded Ruben Minguez Merchan, 6-4, 7-5 in the round of 16. The senior also advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles play, partnering with Papageorgiou. The number eight-seeded pair knocked of teams from Franklin Pierce (8-4) and the University of the District of Columbia (8-1) before falling to the eventual runners-up from Queens.
The Adelphi men's tennis team will be back on the court on Saturday when they head to Southern New Hampshire for a 1:00 PM start.
