Garden City, N.Y. - Making immediate impacts on campus in their time as a Panther, two Adelphi University student-athletes aided their programs above expectations as freshmen.
Mitchell Archer of men's golf and
Jack Tate of baseball were awarded the Adelphi Male Co-Rookie of the Year Award, at the department's end of year awards ceremony in May.
Archer, who hails from DeWitt, N.Y., wasted no time in his first appearance repping the Brown and Gold. The Jamesville-DeWitt High School graduate won the Franklin Pierce Fall Invitational just three months removed from graduation day. Even more impressive was his performance at the Northeast 10 Championships in October, where he was named individual champion following winning a three-hole playoff against Jack Pepin from Southern New Hampshire University. This also led to Archer being named NE10 Player and Rookie of the Year.
Rounding out his first year resume, Archer finished top eight amongst all players at seven of his first nine collegiate tournaments, while having the lowest score of his teammates in five of them.
"I'd like to thank my teammates, right from the jump they made me feel at home... I think that's a big reason why I had success in the fall semester, having great team chemistry like that is very important in golf, even if it may not seem like that," remarked Archer.
Tate was already a Long Island product upon stepping foot in Garden City, spending his high school years just down the road at Wantagh. The freshman started 33 games on the diamond for the baseball program, hitting a team-leading .352 and slugging at .592. Playing primarily in left field, Tate smashed seven round-trippers along with eight doubles to help account for 22 runs batted in.
In addition, the Wantagh graduate compiled a 1.044 OPS, good enough for seventh in the NE10. The conference also awarded him the Southwest Division Rookie Hitter of the Year and First Team All-Conference for his efforts.
