Kings Point, N.Y. - With the help of two wins in the diving tank from
Melany Arevalo, the Adelphi University women's swimming and diving program edged the United States Merchant Marine Academy 117-110, on Thursday, in dual-meet action.
Arevalo picked up a pair of wins on the one-meter and three-meter boards, posting scores of 191.85 and 205.80, respectively.
Highlights:
- The Panthers won six events - inclusive of Arevalo's performances - en route to the narrow, seven-point victory.
- The women opened the meet with a victory in the 200 yard medley relay, featuring Laura Moran, Aizel Pusing, Kelly Tula and Emily Munayirji in a time of 1:53.84 - this quartet recently set a new program record in the specialty at the ECAC Winter Championship, clocking in just under 1:50.
- Munayirji was the first individual to take home a top swim, earning a win in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:03.21.
- Pusing took first in the 50 freestyle in a time of 25.70 and was joined by her sister Ava Pusing who took third in a time of 27.91.
- Tula picked up an individual victory in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.33, which was over five seconds faster than the next competitor.
- Rookie Maya Bieganowski earned points for the squad when she clocked in at 57.32 in the 100 freestyle to finish second as a trio of Panthers took the 2-3-4 spots in the 100 backstroke to add to the team's total on the night.
Adelphi will break for the holiday and be back in action on January 13 when they head to the site of the Northeast 10 Conference Championship meet to take on WPI/Wellsley and Bentley.
