Needham, Mass. - By a significant margin, the Adelphi University Department of Athletics captured all three awarded NE10 Presidents' Cups in 2023-24, the league office presented all three honors at the conference's annual awards banquet on Tuesday night in Needham.
As the league's twelve full-time institutions continue to emerge as the peak of its competition, the NE10 elected to award three Cups starting this year, to reward an overall champion, a men's champion and a women's champion.
At the onset of a new tradition, Adelphi took hold of all three Cups. It is also the first NE10 Presidents' Cup victory for the Panthers since 2016-17, when the 'Cats won all four of their previous Cups in a span of five years.
Since their last Cup win in 2016-17, the Panthers were a runner-up five times and came in third in the 2019-20 fall season installment in what was a COVID-shortened year.
"This culminates a very successful year for Adelphi Athletics. These awards are special because every student-athlete, every coach and every staff member contributes to this success. These are truly department-wide awards," Adelphi Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation
Danny McCabe remarked.
"We are grateful to the leadership of Adelphi University -- the Board of Trustees, President,
Dr. Christine M. Riordan, and the Executive Leadership -- for all of the support and resources they provide to allow our student-athletes to thrive in competition and on campus."
The Presidents' Cup is presented annually to signify overall athletic excellence in the NE10. It is awarded to the institution that compiles the most cumulative points based upon overall regular-season finishes in team sports and final placement at the annual NE10 Championships in individual sports.
An overwhelming difference of 30.5 points separated the Panthers from the rest of the pack this season, after the Brown and Gold missed out on last year's Cup by the slimmest margin of one point.
It was the largest margin of victory for any NE10 institution since 2007-08, when now-Division I Bryant University succeeded by 32.5 points. In fact, Adelphi's 30.5-point victory is the second-largest in the Cup's almost 40-year history.
As Adelphi and Bentley went toe-to-toe for the newly-adopted Men's Sports Cup and Women's Sports Cup, the 'Cats peeled away in both races, winning each by a considerable gap of over ten points.
The Panthers coasted on the strength of their fall and spring seasons, in which six teams earned top billing in the regular season. All but three teams finished no lower than third in their pursuit of an NE10 Championship.
