Life In the Balance With Kerrin Heuser

5/6/2024 12:00:00 PM

As the NCAA wraps up its year-long Division II 50th Anniversary celebration, one of the most highlighted values of Division II is “life in the balance.” Each year at Adelphi, the University’s nearly 400 student-athletes answer the call of being able to balance the rigorous curriculum that the institution offers and competing for championships both at a conference, regional and national level.

One of the most rigorous courses of study at Adelphi is the school’s renowned nursing program, which has been labeled as a top-five nursing program in all of New York State, and cited as one of U.S. News and World Report’s Top 100 nursing schools in the nation.

Droves of student-athletes arrive to Long Island annually to participate in Adelphi’s thriving athletic program and work towards completing their degree.

A fifth-year women’s lacrosse student-athlete at Adelphi, Kerrin Heuser attributes her pursuing a nursing degree to her grandmother, who passed while she was seven. “I saw all the nurses taking care of her and I thought that I really wanted to do this,” she said.

In returning for one final year in an Adelphi uniform, Kerrin, upon completing her bachelor’s degree in Nursing this past December, aced her NCLEX-RN – a nationwide examination for the licensing of nurses – just a month later. She received her license on Feb. 10.

It’s not every day that you find a registered nurse is still in college and playing at the high level that Heuser is playing.

The Adelphi University women’s lacrosse team has a long tradition of success, stamped by a national record of nine NCAA Division II National Championships (the most of any women’s lacrosse program in Division II).

Heuser, who first saw her collegiate career get off the ground under long-time Adelphi head women’s lacrosse coach Joe Spallina at Stony Brook University in 2020, moved to her current residence of 1 South Avenue following the COVID-19 pandemic. And just last season, Kerrin received the first All-America citation of her career, when she was named to the IWLCA All-America Third Team.

This kind of success didn’t come easy though.

Heuser mentioned that, “Managing both (lacrosse and nursing school) is tough, but I owe it to my coaches for helping me appreciate nursing more. They know that I can pursue both playing and going to school at the same time and do it at a high level.”

Head Coach Pat McCabe, who has led the Panthers to the promised land twice in his career and coached the ‘Cats to their last national title in 2019, speaks very highly of his starting midfielder.

“As a player, Kerrin just loves the game. You can see it in her when she scores a goal or when something good happens for our team.”

While he admits that being able to balance playing a sport and pursuing a degree is difficult, it is possible. McCabe says that the University is what attracts recruits to compete for the Brown and Gold.

He goes on to explain that: “To have a nursing program that is so highly regarded makes Adelphi a very attractive destination, and when you combine that with the fact that women’s lacrosse is important at Adelphi, it only enhances the attraction. The list of places that can provide all of these elements puts Adelphi on a very short list, and I’d have to say we’re at the top.”

Not only has Adelphi allowed its student-athletes like Kerrin to grow as a player, but also as a person. She says that one of the biggest skills she’s learned is understanding how to manage her time.

Her teammate Alexandra Leggio, a fellow Nursing major as an underclassman, recalls: “I was sitting with Kerrin in the library and she had a schedule on her phone with everything she was doing. Down to eating, she’d had everything lined up. She’s set a really great example for me.”

Offering time to help out her younger teammates doesn’t go unnoticed. McCabe commented, “She’s kind and supportive, just a great teammate.”

Heuser summarized the following when she passed her NCLEX and attained her license. “It was a sigh of relief. I felt that I could finally play without having that burden on my back.”

She expressed that she is very thankful for her family, reflecting:

"My whole family has been my support system. They’ve supported me in my ups and downs and they have my back through everything."

Not only is her family always by her side, but as is a former teammate and current graduate assistant coach in Alexandra Beebe.

“(Alex) has been on the team since I got here and been able to carry me through some hard times while studying and playing,” adding that while she isn’t on the field playing with her, it’s nice to have Beebe on the sidelines as a coach supporting her.

“If you want to pursue a career that you love and you love a sport so much that you’re willing to split time with it, then you’re going to have to work for everything you want. Putting your heart into it and working hard all the time is the key.”

Student-athletes like Kerrin are what sets Division II apart from the rest.
