Tennis Teams Begin Preparing for Regionals; Earn Bids to NCAA Tournament

5/6/2024 9:00:00 PM

Indianapolis, Ind. - With earning the league's automatic qualifier after capturing their respective NE10 Tournament titles, the Adelphi University men's and women's tennis teams are headed back to the NCAA Division II Championship, the national office revealed in live-aired selection shows Monday night.

Making their first appearances in the big dance under head coach Rebecca Fakas, the Panthers -- on both sides -- will compete for the first time on the national stage since Fakas suited up as a student-athlete at Adelphi.

The last appearance for the men's team came in 2016, while the women's team last went dancing in 2018, with Fakas and Karen Serina still competing as student-athletes.

It is the first instance since 2016, in which both teams qualified for the NCAA Tournament in the same season.

The No. 3 seeded men's team will travel to No. 2 Jefferson University for a winner-take-all contest, and the No. 5 seeded women's team will open the tournament at top-seeded Queens College against No. 4 University of the District of Columbia in first-round action.

The women will have the honors of playing first on Friday, May 10 at 12 noon, followed by the men playing their match on Monday, May 13, also at 12 p.m.

As the tournament is split between two regional hosts, the advancing team from each site will earn a bid to the NCAA Division II National Championship in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Adelphi and UDC went head-to-head in a women's match this spring, in our nation's capital back on Mar. 16.

Although the women lost 6-1, Katarina Liedbeck, Roisin Boyd and Caterina Federici all played a decisive third set in singles, in what was a 3-1 match at the time.

More information is forthcoming, but stay tuned to AUPanthers.com for up-to-the-minute updates on the Adelphi men's and women's tennis teams.
