Mansfield, Mass. - After an impressive two weeks, Adelphi University's own
Ilaria Ponziani and
Axel Romney have won Northeast-10 Player and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively, as announced by the conference on Wednesday afternoon.
Ponziani won the individual championship at the Saint Anselm Orlando Invitational, held last week at Eagle Creek Golf Club. The senior leveraged her course-best 75 through the first round to earn a big advantage over most of the field. A 3-over 76 in Round 2 also tied for best on the day, securing her first individual title since the Panther Battle at the Bay in April 2023.
Romney led his seasoned peers at the Glen Oaks invitational, hosted earlier this week by Farmingdale State at Glen Oaks Club. In an 18-hole competition, the freshman was named Rookie of the Week, after shooting an even 36 on both the front and back nine of the Par 72 course. His performance earned him a tie for second place, and first amongst any non-Farmingdale golfer.
The two now focus on the rest of the season, with the men competing in the Spartan Invitational on Friday (Apr. 5), hosted by St. Thomas Aquinas College at Rotella Golf Club. The women, on the other hand, will next compete at the Hawk Invitational starting on Monday (Apr. 8) at Candia Woods Golf Links in Candia, N.H.
