Garden City, N.Y. - The likes of
Barbie Quagliardi,
Julia Kielan and
Amanda Franstedt have graduated, but the future of the Adelphi University women's tennis program is brighter than ever.
Even with two upperclassmen on the roster in 2023-24, the 'Cats surely expect to contend for the NE10 Championship this fall.
Adelphi came up a win shy of a return trip to the NE10 Championship final in 2022, falling in a 4-3 thriller to eventual champion Southern New Hampshire University in the semifinals.
The Panthers will get challenged from the start, playing host to Jefferson University in their season opener on Sept. 7, followed by the team's NE10 opener against Franklin Pierce University on Sept. 9 -- both of whom were runner-ups for their respective conference championships a season ago.
The attention then turns to the site of the U.S. Open -- the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center -- for the annual ITA East Region Championships, where reigning NE10 Rookie of the Year
Sanne Selmer Gilje will be on hand to defend her singles crown from last year.
Selmer Gilje was an astounding 13-3 in singles competition as a freshman in 2022, posting a stellar 6-1 record at the No. 1 flight and a 4-1 mark in NE10 matches.
As the 'Cats make their playoff push, the Brown and Gold will travel to SNHU for the long-awaited re-match when their league schedule resumes on Sept. 23.
The Panthers will honor their lone graduating senior --
Carolina Chaves -- prior to the start of their Oct. 4 match against American International College.
Adelphi has yet to miss out on the NE10 Tournament since its arrival to the conference in 2009, winning three consecutive championships along the way.
