Mansfield, Mass. - In the near fifteen years the Panthers have spent as a member of the NE10, the Adelphi University men's tennis team has remained in search of both an NE10 Tournament and regular-season title.
Part of that drought has finally ended in 2023.
With a 5-1 finish to NE10 play, the 'Cats have earned a long-awaited share of the NE10's regular-season trophy. It is only the third time (1992-93, 2010-11) in league history that multiple teams have shared the crown.
"The players have been working hard and should be very proud of winning the program's first-ever NE10 regular-season title," said Head Coach
Rebecca Fakas. "The competitive level of the conference has been great this season, with a lot of quality teams."
The team's 11 regular-season wins tie the 2013-14 and 2015-16 squads for the second-most single-season wins by the program since Adelphi joined the NE10 in the fall of 2009.
"Our focus now shifts towards the playoffs and we look forward to a strong postseason performance later this week," Fakas concluded.
With earning the No. 2 seed by virtue of a head-to-head tiebreaker, Adelphi receives an automatic bye to the semifinals and will host Southern New Hampshire University on Thursday for the right to advance to this weekend's NE10 Championship.
The Panthers have twice qualified for the NE10 Championship final in their history -- in back-to-back seasons (2015, 2016).Â
This spring, the 'Cats won their first head-to-head meeting (third all-time) with SNHUÂ since 2015. With
Marko Jovanovic prevailing over reigning NE10 Player and Rookie of the Year Jonathan Berling, the Panthers stunned SNHU by a 5-2 final back on Mar. 25.
In the other semifinal, No. 1 seed Le Moyne College will host the winner of Tuesday's first-round meeting between No. 4 seed Saint Michael's College and No. 5 seed Bentley University.
The 2023 NE10 Men's Tennis Championship Final will commence either Saturday, Apr. 22 or Sunday, Apr. 23 at the highest remaining seed.
