Staten Island, N.Y. - The Adelphi University swimming and diving teams started its season with aplomb on Friday night, sweeping the College of Staten Island and Hunter College in combo action between the men's and women's teams.
Adelphi's men's team was 179-103 winners against CSI, while Adelphi's women's team was 173-84 winners against Hunter and 158-107 winners against CSI. The head-to-head competition between Adelphi and CSI was doubly notable, as the Dolphins begin 2023-24 as associate members of the Northeast-10 Conference in swimming and diving.
The 'Cats placed first in 10 of 16 of the women's events on the day's schedule, and also touched the wall first in 13 of 16 of the men's events. Sophomore
Emily Munayirji, the 2022-23 women's MVP, kicked off her second season in Brown and Gold with four first-place finishes, including individually in the 200 freestyle and backstroke event.
Timothy Yeung lapped the field by more than 20 seconds in the 1000-yard freestyle, while
Ryan Kakimseit's nearly 14-second win in the 200-yard backstroke was also one of Adelphi's most impressive individual performances in the meet overall. He, in fact, set two new school records in the meet: His 200-back time of 1:53.91 was a new AU best, breaking Daniel Lee's 2017 mark of 1:55.96 from the ECAC Championships, and his 52:13 time in the 100-meter backstroke set a new Brown and Gold best by seven tenths, breaking Corey McKee's mark of 52.20 that stood since 2011.
On the women's side,
Delaney Noel's nearly 12-second win in the 500 freestyle was also a standout. The junior also touched the wall first in the 1000-yard free in a time of 11:50.02, more than five seconds faster than teammate
Kellee Munoz.
As a team, Adelphi also won three of the four relays, including near- or more than five-second wins in both 200-yard medley relays.
AU is back in action in a week's time against NE10 Conference foe Pace University at 4 p.m.
