Flushing, N.Y. - Over the weekend, the Adelphi University men's tennis team joined three other local programs at the Alan Landes Invitational to kick off the fall slate of its 2022-23 season.
The two-day tournament, hosted by Queens College, also pitted the Panthers against opponents from St. Thomas Aquinas College and St. Francis College Brooklyn.
Viktor Hockl,
Thomas Horsley and
Henrique Souza each reached the semifinals of their respective singles draws.
A first-set tiebreaker highlighted Hockl's first collegiate match in a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 victory. Horsley won his quarterfinal in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Souza came back from losing the first set 3-6 to prevail in the next two sets, 6-1 and 10-4.
Souza took his semifinal opponent -- Lucas Demuth of Queens College -- to a first-set tiebreaker, but fell short in a 6-7 (5-7), 0-6 decision.
In doubles, the pairing of
Valentin Le Goupil-Maier and
Salomon Arce Lema won their first-round match against St. Francis Brooklyn's Ivan Bernal and Javier Nicolau, 6-4.
A dual match with Dominican University is next up for the Panthers on Saturday (Sept. 17) at 12 p.m. in Orangeburg.
