New Haven, Conn. - A leak in the roof at James Moore Field House halted the final regular-season game of the 2021-22 season between the Adelphi University women's basketball team and Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday night.
Although the Panthers led at the time of the stoppage in the fourth quarter, the game will be ruled as a no contest and therefore not count towards both teams' records as an official game.
Since the contest has no ultimate effect on postseason seeding, Adelphi will earn the Southwest Division's No. 3 seed in the NE10 Championship and host Franklin Pierce University, the Northwest Division's No. 6 seed, on Friday (Feb. 25) at 5:30 p.m.
Before the break in action, the Panthers rode a 13-1 second-quarter run to a 32-23 lead and eventually a 32-27 halftime advantage.
Adelphi buried four unanswered buckets in the quarter, on the efforts of four different scorers. Meanwhile,
Kaitlyn O'Connell hit the go-ahead three-pointer midway through the period.
The Brown and Gold shot 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from the field in the second quarter and limited the Owls to only 2-of-10 (20.0 percent) shooting.
SCSUÂ did come within a point of tying the score in the third, but a 10-3 response by Adelphi seemed to have separated the two teams for good.
Rebecca Lee accounted for seven of the points, including a run-ending three-point play. O'Connell drilled her second triple of the night.
As the fourth quarter got underway, a break in the roof caused by hazardous weather conditions brought on a leak that forced the teams to their respective benches and ended the game.
At the stoppage, which came at the 9:42 mark of the fourth quarter,
Emily Miccile led all players with 14 points. Miccile, O'Connell and
Ty'zhea Hawkins each drained two threes on the evening.
The Panthers and Ravens met in the regular season on January 22 at the Center for Recreation and Sport, where the two squads will reconvene this Friday. Adelphi prevailed 68-67Â in that meeting.
