Garden City, N.Y. - After a sensational showing in the Hamptons, Adelphi University starting pitcher
Nicolas Luc will finish the summer in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League for the Orleans Firebirds.
Luc's career year at Adelphi this season carried over to the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League, where he headlined the starting rotation for the Westhampton Aviators.
In six starts this summer for Westhampton, Luc posted a perfect 4-0 record with an immaculate 2.29 earned-run average. He walked only eight batters and struck out 53 batters over 31.1 innings pitched.
The right-hander won each of his first four decisions and tallied double-digit strikeouts in each of the last three, including an HCBL-record-tying 14-strikeout performance against the Sag Harbor Whalers on Jun. 30.
Opponents batted a measly .119 against Luc across his eight outings. He also started the HCBL All-Star Game for
Bill Ianniciello and struck out the side in his inning of work.
"Starting the HCBL All-Star Game was a highlight to my summer so far," Luc offered.
"Nic had a great summer season for the Westhampton Aviators in the HCBL", said Ianniciello, who had a close-up view as head coach of the rival Riverhead Tomcats. "We are excited to see Nic advance to the Cape Cod League. This is another step towards Nic's goal of pitching at the professional level."
It is common for higher-end, prospect-type players having strong summers in well-regarded prospect leagues like the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League, once their seasons are done, to fill spots in more senior, premier leagues for the stretch runs to their regular seasons and playoffs.
Founded in 1885, the Cape Cod Baseball League is the premier collegiate summer baseball league in the nation. One in every six Major League Baseball players has played in the Cape, with 300 Cape Cod Baseball League alumni actively playing in the majors on an annual basis.
With only a week left in the regular season, Luc is expected to make his debut in a relief role this Saturday (Jul. 31) against the Chatham Anglers at 7 p.m. in Chatham, Mass. He will start the team's final game of the regular season next Wednesday (Aug. 4) at Brewster.
