Flushing, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's tennis team started off its fall season this past weekend at the 2019 ITA Division II East Region Small College Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing.
In doubles, the pairs of
David Robres de Veciana and
Luke Attride-Stirling and
Henrique Souza and
Valentin Le Goupil-Maier each won first-round matches, before losing in the second round.
Robres and Attride-Stirling won 8-6 over Josh Weiss and Matt Mosher of Saint Michael's, while Souza and Le Goupil-Maier came away with an 8-5 victory against Dominican's Skylar Ross and Jorge Astillero Cervera.
Attride-Stirling was also the lone Panther to reach the main singles draw. He qualified with a pair of convincing decisions -- an 8-1 rout of Stonehill's Aaron Diamond and an 8-3 triumph over Concordia's Tomer Mendler, the No. 24 seeded player in the tournament.
In the main bracket, Attride-Stirling earned a first-round victory, knocking off fellow qualifier Borna Markusic from University of the Sciences in a tiebreaker, 10-8. He then lost to the draw's top-seeded player in the next round -- Concordia's Michele Fenoaltea - in straight sets (6-3, 6-2).
AU's
Pietro Sole was ranked as the No. 28 seeded player at the championship and received a first-round bye. He lost though to Post's Cooper Smith in his qualifying match, 8-3. Souza also fell just short of securing his bid in the main draw, as he lost 8-2 in his qualifier to UDC's Juan Estevez Hernandez.
The Panthers will close out their short fall campaign this weekend (Sept. 20-21) at the Hofstra Fall Invitational in Hempstead.
