Garden City, N.Y. - Adelphi University director of athletics
Danny McCabe has announced Frank Russo is the next head coach of the Panthers' men's and women's tennis teams, effective July 17.
Russo comes to Adelphi having spent the last year as the assistant men's tennis coach at Saint John's University.
"I'm excited to come on and be the head coach of both the men's and women's teams here at Adelphi, and lead both programs in the competitive Northeast-10 Conference," Russo said.
"I'd like to thank
Danny McCabe, the search committee and the entire athletic department for trusting me to be the next head coach. Both teams have a strong history in the region, and I'm looking forward to the opportunity to help both teams return to the NCAA tournament and beyond."
At Saint John's, he helped the men's team to a 19-6 record last season, and the Red Storm coaching staff was named the 2019 BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year after leading the team to the regular season conference title and the top seed in the league tournament.
Before Saint John's, Russo served as an assistant coach at Nicholls State in Thibodaux, La. for both the men's and women's programs for the 2017-18 season after a one-year stint at Fordham University.
At Fordham, the women's squad compiled a 20-win season and reached the semifinals of the Atlantic-10 conference tournament in 2016-17, while the men's team also posted a winning record. In his one season with both teams, Russo signed a total of six student-athletes to National Letters of Intent.
Before Fordham, Russo was the owner of New Level Tennis in Darien, Conn. where he coordinated the most extensive sports program in Darien, providing tennis lessons and camps for both kids and adults of all ages.
Before his time in Darien, Russo was the head academy pro at Johnstone Tennis Academy in Purchase, N.Y., where his students consisted of several top 25 Eastern section juniors. In addition to his time on the court, Russo recruited for the academy and traveled with players to tournaments.
He also served as a teaching pro at Shippan Racquet Club in Stamford, Conn. and before that, The Ocean Club in Long Beach and Sportime in the Hamptons in East Quogue, N.Y.
A native of Sayville, N.Y., Russo graduated from Iona College in 2003 after playing four seasons with the Gaels, which included two years as team captain.
