Flushing, N.Y. - Senior
Samantha Perri and sophomore
Nicole Kielan's results paced the weekend effort for the Adelphi University tennis programs at the ITA East Region Championship, hosted at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens.
The tandem reached the semifinals of the doubles event before falling to eventual regional champions Diana Baumgartnere and Barbie Quagliardi of NYIT on Monday morning.
The defeat capped a successful weekend for Perri, who was the lone Panther on either team to earn direct acceptance into the singles main draw, as she also reached the quarterfinals herself.
Perri, unseeded in the women's singles, recorded three wins over the weekend, beginning with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Laura Fermosel of the University of New Haven. Another 6-2, 6-4 win over Ivana Andric of NYIT followed, before the senior upended conference foe Alexandra Vo of longtime rival Stonehill College in a match tiebreak, 3-6, 6-4, 10-5.
Her run was ended in the last eight by Quagliardi in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.
Kielan was one of four Panthers to come through the qualifying rounds and earn a spot in the main draw. After an opening round bye, the sophomore defeated Nicole Downey of Stonehill, 8-2, before falling in the first round of the singles main draw to Laura Ortega Jover of Queens College.
Joining her in a successful qualifying campaign were
Nicole Stay,
Sabin Adrian Saveluc and newcomer
Pietro Sole. Stay's effort in the women's qualifying draw saw her defeat Kayla Hodas of Saint Anselm and Rosemary Campanella of Merrimack, while Saveluc and Sole each won two matches to reach the men's singles main draw.Â
Saveluc defeated Jameson Keppeler of Assumption College and Thomas Pitchley of Chestnut Hill, while Sole was victorious in his Adelphi debut against Daniel Kmetz of Saint Anselm and Nicholas Volos of Queens.
The women return to dual match action next weekend, heading to Saint Anselm and Assumption in Northeast-10 Conference action, while the men will head to the Hofstra Invitational to continue tournament play.Â
