Garden City, N.Y. - The semester has hardly begun, but Adelphi athletic teams are already making a difference in the area this fall. Over the weekend, multiple student-athletes from four Adelphi athletic teams visited local businesses and events in community service efforts.

Men's basketball, softball, field hockey and track and field teams dedicated their time during the first weeks of returning to Adelphi.

The men's basketball program recently instituted "Selfless Sunday" for their team, in which student-athletes participate in community service activities on Sundays to give back in the area.

Over the course of the 2018-19 school year, members of the team will volunteer at Winthrop Children's Hospital, the Travis Manion Foundation, clinics, the Festival By the Sea and events on the Adelphi University campus. The team has already hosted a basketball clinic for the Nassau PAL, as well as volunteering on Welcome Weekend at Adelphi.

This past weekend, members of the softball team embarked on their annual fall community service, and visited three local grocery stores to collect canned goods and donations for Island Harvest. The program is the largest hunger relief organization on Long Island.

Also over the weekend, the field hockey team went to Eisenhower Park to walk in the Walk for Wishes event hosted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the official charity of Division II, and will run the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers 5K later this month.

The track and field team has also participated in multiple community service efforts since returning to campus, helping at several runs in the area. On Sept. 9, the team also volunteered at the Blazing Trails for Autism event in Great Neck, N.Y. Cross country will join them this weekend at Jones Beach for the Brain Tumor walk.
