Brookville, N.Y. - Though fierce rivals on the field, the Adelphi University and LIU Post women's lacrosse teams will again join forces for the greater good this weekend.
Ahead of the non-league clash between the Pioneers and Panthers at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium, the second-annual LIU Post and Adelphi Alumni vs. Alumni charity game will also take place on April 7, with proceeds going to a caused very close to home.
In what both programs hope to become a longstanding, annual tradition after it began last year, alumni from both teams are invited to participate in a friendly contest in conjunction with this year's game, which will begin in earnest at 2 p.m. in Brookville on Saturday.
Â
This year, the Pioneers and Panthers will be playing in support of Kieran Patrick Meekins, the son of LIU Post alum and 2007 national champion Kristy Meekins (Abrams). Kieran was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at a young age and is a candidate for a new, potentially life-changing surgery. LIU Post and Adelphi will wear special t-shirts during pre-game warmups with a green ribbon and #CPStrong inscribed to show support for Kieran and all who suffer from cerebral palsy.
Â
Last season, the two teams donated the funds collected from the inaugural alumni game to pediatric cancer research.
Rather than charging admission for Saturday's contest, both teams request that fans in attendance make a minimum $5 donation that will assist in the medical expenses associated with Kieran's surgery.
