Men's Tennis Falls in Decisive Match to Jefferson, 5-4

3/2/2018 7:54:00 PM

Philadelphia, Pa. - With the match level at 4-4 overall, Jefferson University's Jacobo Atri scored a come-from-behind singles victory over Luke Attride-Stirling to hand the Adelphi University men's tennis team a 5-4 defeat in its third match of the season on Friday afternoon.

The Panthers (0-3) trailed 2-1 at the close of doubles play and later, 4-2 in the match, but Sabin Adrian Saveluc and Connor Dove both recorded singles wins in straight sets to even the overall match score at 4-4 and set up the deciding point at No.4 singles.

The sophomore out of Romania scored an epic third singles victory in a match tiebreak that was pushed to extra points, eventually prevailing over Joao Pedro Marcal 6-3, 1-6, 14-12, before Dove edged a tight two-setter against Cesar Solis in the No.6 spot, 6-4, 7-5.

Though the Adelphi freshman started the fourth-singles match brightly, winning the first set 6-4, he was unable to hold on to victory and fell by the slimmest of margins. Atri edged the second set in the late stages to push the match to a decisive tiebreak, which also needed to be decided by extra points past the standard 10.

Saveluc went 2-0 in the match individually, as he and Matteo Cannavera partnered for Adelphi's lone win in doubles, an 8-4 victory at No.1. In addition, sophomore transfer Ilya Kalabukhau scored his first win of the season wtih a 6-4, 6-3 win over Joseph Sison at No.5 singles.

The Panthers are back in action on Tuesday, March 6 at 12:30 p.m. for their first home match of the season, opening Northeast-10 Conference action vs. Saint Michael's College.
