Zhang Impresses at USMMA Invitational, Men Place 5th; Women 4th

Kings Point, N.Y. - Freshman Crystal Zhang continued to impress in the lanes on Saturday at the United States Merchant Marine Academy Invitational, recording two top finishes throughout the day and helping her team to a fourth place finish. The men placed fifth, with strong performances from top swimmer Daniel Lee followed by Matthew Mazur. 

Zhang took home two first place finishes in the 200 yard IM and the 200 butterfly events. Her time in the medley clocked in three seconds quicker than the next finisher and she swam six seconds faster than the second place swimmer in the butterfly. Finishing third in that event was Emma Brown in a time of 2:27.02.

Marianne Bischofberger raced to a personal best in the 100-yard backstroke event, placing fifth overall in a time of 1:04.73 while also recording personal bests in two additional distances, the 200-yard backstroke and 500-yard freestyle. 

For the men, Lee's best finish of the meet came in the 100-yard  butterfly event, where he clocked 54.27 to place fifth. Mazur was responsible for a sixth place finish in the 500 freestyle event as Eian McKeon came in at 5:08.76 in the same event, swimming a season-best time to place fourth. 

Zack Vreeland raced to season bests in two events at the annual invitational, posting a 51.07 in the 100 yard freestyle and a time of 26.38 in the 50 yard backstroke. 

The swim team returns to action when they compete at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, hosted at the Nassau County Aquatics Center located in Eisenhower Park. Competition is expected to begin Friday, November 30.
