Adelphi Athletics Announces #DubThatCat Panther Mascot Contest

#DubThatCat Nomination Form
Garden City, N.Y. -- The Adelphi University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, along with the Center for Student Involvement, have announced the #DubThatCat mascot contest, to once and for all bestow a name upon the Adelphi Panther, the university's mascot for 70 years.

The Adelphi University mascot and emblem, the Panther, was first proposed by freshman Jim Young in 1946. The Adelphi mascot proposal was accepted by the Athletics Department and was first used by the men's basketball team in a game against the Aggies of SUNY Farmingdale in January 1947.

However, the Adelphi Panther never had a name by which fans could call it -- until now.

Beginning today, Tuesday, Feb. 21, submissions will be taken for name suggestions and will be accepted up until March 12, the day before the university's annual spring break. Submissions will be accepted and counted over the following platforms:
  • Clicking here or on the above submission form, with your name, email address and suggested name for the Panther
  • Tweeting your suggestion to @AUPanthers, or tweet using the hashtag #DubThatCat.
  • Comment on this Instagram post (or any others featuring the hashtag #DubThatCat over the next two weeks.)
  • Comment on this Facebook post
In addition, with the assistance of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a suggestion box will be placed at the entrance to all Adelphi home contests over the next two weeks, allowing students, alumni and fans to make their voices heard and suggest the Panther's name.

Following the period for submissions, the top five finalists, selected by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, will be announced on social media after spring break, with the final voting opening the week of March 20 and running through April 2. The winning name will be announced on Tuesday, April 4 at aupanthers.com and on social media, and the winner of the contest will be selected at random from those fans who submitted the winning name. That winner will then be contacted by that athletic department via their submitted contact information to receive an Adelphi Athletics prize pack.
